Reconciliation Statement
DISCOVELO is committed to the concept of ‘doing good through business’. For our team, this means using our business model and our work to help to solve the most pressing problems of our time while also generating value and growth in our company.
In Canada, we acknowledge the critical importance of relationships with Indigenous Peoples. We are aware of the impact that colonial actions, including residential schools, have had on Indigenous Peoples, and DISCOVELO is committed to better understanding these impacts and the conditions they have created in Canada. DISCOVELO is part of a national movement towards Reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous peoples, informed by:
- The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action
- The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
- Sec. 35 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
DISCOVELO hereby declares its commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and we take guidance from the Principles of Reconciliation outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including but not limited to:
5. Reconciliation must create a more equitable and inclusive society by closing the gaps in social, health, and economic outcomes that exist between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians.
6. All Canadians, as Treaty peoples, take responsibility for establishing and maintaining mutually respectful relationships.
We are committed to working to address the Calls to Action made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including but not limited to:
92. We call upon the corporate sector in Canada to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a reconciliation framework and to apply its principles, norms, and standards to corporate policy and core operational activities involving Indigenous peoples and their lands and resources. This would include, but not be limited to, the following:
ii. Ensure that Aboriginal peoples have equitable access to jobs, training, and education opportunities in the corporate sector, and that Aboriginal communities gain long-term sustainable benefits from economic development projects.
iii. Provide education for management and staff on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require skills based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.
DISCOVELO is committed to both ongoing training and learning that will improve our capacity to deliver on these commitments, and to using this knowledge and these skills in the development and implementation of our products and services.
DISCOVELO is also committed to moving beyond this Statement of Reconciliation and will develop and implement an Action Plan which will be reviewed regularly. This work will start with Yukon First Nations, as the founding team lives and conducts their work and play in the Traditional Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council.
